They're in a derelict ancient airship. The octopus thing probably grabbed one out of the arsenal because it was shiny.

I never really understood loot tables. I suppose it comes from, well, never playing DnD but they always seemed to arbitrary to me and likely to bring about disaster.
Makes me wonder if anyone has ever attempted to take Monster Hunter's set-up and put it to paper-and-pen.

sure you could use the get resources from your enviroment and turn them into equipment, it exists in limited amounts anyway, but it still takes time and resources to create weapons and armor, and more time and resources to enchant them. Add to this the skill requirements, and it gets unreasonable quickly.
Actually it's set up so you don't have to think about that stuff too much, it's abstract, you put x amount of money and y amount of time into crafting, and you get platemail.
Honestly, the loot tables aren't unreasonable with scavenger species or intelligent ones, and if my games are at all normal, what you get out of animals usually is logical and requires skills.
